The Truth Behind the $52 Million BJJ Lawsuit: Francisco “Sinistro” Iturralde Speaks Out

Francisco “Sinistro” Iturralde Speaks Out

In recent weeks, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world has been rocked by headlines about a staggering $52 million lawsuit involving renowned instructor Francisco “Sinistro” Iturralde. The case, which stems from a tragic injury during a sparring session, has ignited intense debate online. But beyond the clickbait and courtroom soundbites lies a human story — one of heartbreak, misunderstanding, and resilience. In this exclusive article, Francisco shares his truth, in his own words.

Part 1: A Life on the Mats

“My name is Francisco Iturralde. I’ve been practicing Jiu-Jitsu since I was seven years old. Now I am 33. Currently, I am an instructor, business owner of a Jiu-Jitsu academy, husband, father, and friend to over a hundred of my students and leader to affiliated gyms in Mexico and Texas besides my academy in California.”

From humble beginnings in Guayaquil, Ecuador, to becoming one of the most respected figures in the international BJJ community, Iturralde’s journey has been one of passion and dedication.

“By the time I was 19, I was offered a job position teaching in New York City under Professor Fabio Clemente… After being with him for a few years, I ended up moving to California, training under Professor Cobrinha, where I sharpened my skills and made it to be one of the top five lightweight competitors of my generation.”

Though he achieved success as a competitor, Francisco ultimately found his purpose in teaching — not just champions, but everyday people seeking balance and joy through the gentle art.

“I wanted to replicate this camaraderie that I was brought up training with… a fun environment free of ego and a place where they can be safe, train, have fun with Jiu-Jitsu, and enjoy the art.”

But then, in December 2017, everything changed.

Part 2: The Accident That Changed Everything

“Jack was an incredible athlete… showing extreme skill and an aggressive style when competing… His vast experience in wrestling made him a very skillful grappler and way beyond the level of an average white belt.”

During a sparring session with this student — a highly capable grappler named Jack — a tragic injury occurred.

“I was attempting a back take, and Jack attempted a Granby Roll… As a result of the exchange of techniques, a tragic accident happened and he hurt his cervical spine.”

While the media rushed to assign blame, Francisco insists this was a freak accident — the kind of nightmare that can happen in any contact sport.

“There is video footage… What is being said publicly is mostly assumptions… It was actually a tragic freak accident — any grappler or fighter’s worst nightmare. I do not believe anyone would do this on purpose.”

Jack has since made a remarkable recovery, inspiring many with his strength and determination — a point Francisco is quick to acknowledge.

“Thanks to God, he recovered… climbing mountains, racing bicycles, and continues to inspire all who have ever been injured.”

Part 3: Silenced, Traumatized, and Misrepresented

“Following the accident, I was forbidden to talk or have any contact with my student Jack… This goes against my nature.”

In the aftermath, Francisco’s world crumbled. While he wanted to reach out, he was legally barred from doing so.

“Right after the injury, I was forced by my employer to stay at the gym and continue teaching… I was scared of teaching. I was scared of sparring… I was truly traumatized.”

He left his job, unsure if he could ever return to the mats.

“This was 100% trauma inflicted by the accident… I had to accept and do as they instructed.”

Even his attempt to send a book of comfort — Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind — was blocked.

“The insurance company lawyers forbade me from any contact… I had no choice but to follow orders and move on with my life.”

Thanks to support from fellow black belt Clark Gracie, Francisco found the strength to return to teaching and later opened his own studio.

“If it wasn’t for him, I might have quit Jiu-Jitsu completely.”

But the trial, he says, was anything but fair.

“The trial was not justice… Plaintiff lawyers tried to prove I was reckless… They manipulated evidence… Despite being a white belt, Jack was a highly skilled grappler.”

Worse yet, Francisco says his character was attacked in court.

“They fabricated claims… Lawyers painted me as a terrible human being, which is not true. I am a caring instructor and father… I’ve never done anything violent in my life.”

He felt like a pawn in a larger game, forced to remain silent while others distorted the truth.

“Because of objections and trial procedures I did not understand, I was unable to defend myself fully.”

Part 4: The Human Cost

“Thank you for taking the time to hear my side of the story.”

Since the verdict, Francisco has faced a tidal wave of online hate and personal threats.

“Internet trolls messaging me… leaving threatening messages, wishing me the worst… I hope they will also take the time to read this statement and understand the other side of the story.”

While others profited from the narrative of a reckless instructor harming a helpless student, Francisco wants the community to remember what Jiu-Jitsu truly stands for.

“To me, Jiu-Jitsu is a sport and a lifestyle — not fighting. It is about bonds and community.”

Despite the hardship, he still holds love for the art and the people who practice it.

“I love you all, Jiu-Jitsu community. Jiu-Jitsu has given me the greatest purpose in my life.”

In a sport built on trust, tragedy tests us in unimaginable ways. Francisco “Sinistro” Iturralde is not asking for sympathy — only to be heard. This is not just a story about a lawsuit. It’s about trauma, silence, resilience, and the fight to preserve one’s name in a world quick to judge.

The mats have always been a place of transformation. For Francisco, that journey continues.
